So what I mean by that is if I do Flame belch + chainsaw OR flamebelch + glory kill the effect is really the same as if they'd just built it right into those other abilities it's just less annoying since I don't have to hit as many buttons.īeyond that there were several guns that playing both games back to back just "feel worse" to me subjectively in Eternal than they did in 2016. The Flame Belch makes sense to me on paper, but in practice I just ended up using it before glory kills or chainsaws so if they'd just added in the effect to those it would've made no difference in complexity for my playstyle. I already mentioned my thoughts on blood punch, but for another example, I understand low ammo counts for the purpose of pushing the player to use the chainsaw ability and for the purpose of incentivizing the player to use all their weapons, but the extent to which this was pushed just irritated me in practice. Eternal may very well be the best example of properly multithreading games on the CPU side I know of which on its own is a tremendous achievement I hope other games can learn from.įor context, I've beaten both titles on Nightmare difficulty by this point and I've watched a lot of videos on Eternal for example regarding all the best techs/swap combos for high level play that i've tried to integrate into my rotation for Eternal, but in the end I personally ended up feeling like a lot of the additions/changes were, well, "annoying" I guess rather than fun.

For me I'd say I also prefer the art direction in 2016 to Eternal though Eternal on a purely technical level has some outstanding improvements (even RT and DLSS) and I do like the art a lot (that DLC gun/rain effect is awesome/some of the backgrounds are top tier). The story in Eternal wasn't bad, they went for more of a fantasy hybrid this time around but I didn't like some of the twists personally and I just found myself enjoying 2016's more overall (to each their own and all that, just my opinion of course). Hayden in 2016 is one of my favorite villains since depending on how you look at it, he had a valid point doing what he did and he also took measures to mitigate risk (one of which was you, the player). Of course Eternal does have a lot of powerful animation cancels of its own, but no matter how I setup my keybinds I just sorta found many of them to be uncomfortable/awkward to pull off personally which negatively impacted my enjoyment in using them I'd say (and they're basically mandatory if you have any plans of playing on nightmare/ultra nightmare).īeyond that I preferred the story/setting in 2016 to Eternal myself. One way to address this might've been to provide a Rune in Eternal that replaced Blood Punch with a standard melee, that sorta thing. I would give up Blood Punch altogether if it meant just getting the standard melee back. For example, in 2016 you could animation cancel a melee in between combat shotgun blasts which is just something I really enjoy doing. The Dash in particular I think is a great change in Eternal, but one thing I found myself really missing was the standard melee dealing damage from 2016. Nevertheless, Doom Eternal has been a hit, and with The Ancient Gods – Part Two arriving today on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Stadia, it’s highly likely you’re going to go toe-to-toe with a Marauder or two one last time.Which do you like more? I loved both games, but for me I'd say DOOM 2016 (though there are aspects of Eternal I'd say I like more).

"The idea was that there would be one that would command your respect, and then what that would do for the other that when he is out on the floor," Martin said. In the same interview, Martin also defended the Marauder a divisive enemy that many complain hobbles the rhythm of the frenetic shooter with his counterattacks and relentless zoning.

In an interview over at PC Gamer, Doom Eternal director Hugo Martin has revealed some interesting bytes of information about the game – with perhaps the most telling being that Doom Eternal has a higher completion percentage than 2016's rebooted Doom. Doom Eternal is getting its final piece of DLC today, and ahead of the finale of the Doom Slayer saga, its developers have been reflecting on the rebooted series.
